Shabalin left his home town of Samara at the age of 15 as well to train in Bulgaria and then returned to Russia ... Shabalin underwent meniscus surgery on his right knee in May 2007 and appendix surgery in September 2007; he then needed surgery on the meniscus in his left knee in December 2007 immediately after they won gold at the Grand Prix Final ... Recovered enough to compete and win gold at the 2008 European Championships, but a re-injury to the left knee caused the team to withdraw from the 2008 World Championships ... Switched coaches in June 2008, moving to the U.S. to train under Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karpanosov ... Withdrew from the 2009 European Championships after he hurt his knee during the compulsory dance ... Returned two months later to win their first world title, taking the gold in Los Angeles and ending Russia's rare three-year hiatus from the top of the dance podium ... Missed the 2009 ISU Grand Prix Series due to his knee problems.
She is engaged to Russian ice dancer Roman Kostomarov, the 2006 Olympic champion ... Their daughter, Anastasia, was born Jan. 2, 2011 ... He married Russian actress Irina Grineva in November 2010.
