Began skating at age 8 after his grandmother bought him skates for Christmas ... Started in group lessons with the goal of playing hockey but began succeeding in figure skating ... Formerly coached by Viktor Kudriavtsev (2002-03) ... Overcame left hip stress in the latter half of 2004.

Lysacek graduated Neuqua Valley High School in 2003 ... Earned a number of academic achievement awards including the 1999 Presidential Award for Academic Excellence ... Member of the honor roll throughout high school ... Has two sisters, the younger of which plays on a nationally ranked volleyball club and is on full scholarship to Charleston Southern University ... Serves on the Honorary Board of Figure Skating in Harlem, the Celebrity Board of Ronald McDonald House Charities and is a partner of Help USA ... Also supports Make a Wish Foundation, P.S. Arts and Elizabeth Glaser Ped. HIV foundation ... In April 2012, appointed a sports envoy by the U.S. Department of State, a position in which he engages overseas youth in positive dialogue on the importance of education, positive health practices and respect for diversity ... Served as the spokesman for U.S. Figure Skating’s highly acclaimed film RISE ... With partner Anna Trebunskaya, finished second on the 10th season of "Dancing with the Stars" ... Won 2009 and '10 LA Sports Award for Sports Moment of the Year ... Nominated for an ESPY in the category of "Best Male U.S. Olympic Athlete" and for SI Sportsman of the Year ... Threw out the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game ... Served as a judge at the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant.
