Rankings Summary:A skater or team’s ranking is determined by the total points accumulated since the 2005-06 season. The system is weighted so recent finishes count more than older ones.
Skaters receive 100 percent credit from results from the current (2007-08) season; point totals from 2006-07 are factored by .7 and results from 2005-06 are multiplied by .3.
Because skaters compete at different times of the year, there must be a way to “level the playing field.” This is done thusly: once a skater competes in their first event of the 2007-08 season, that competition is counted in full and their first competition from 2005-06 is dropped. That way, the number of competitions that count toward skaters’ scores remains relatively close.
Once a skater’s score is totaled up, it is then divided by a minimum of 10 (10 being deemed the average number of competitions in which a skater or team should appear in a two-year time period). Even if a skater has not competed in 10 competitions dating back to the 2005-06 season,
their total points must be divided by 10. If a skater or team has appeared in more than 10 events, that number will be used as the divisor.
Let’s take the case of U.S. ice dancing team Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates:

Their finishes in their two Junior Grand Prix assignments netted them 425 points, all of which counts toward their point total. They amassed 665 points from their collective 2006-07 finishes, a total which is factored by .7, giving them 465.5 points for the season. Because they have already competed twice in 2007-08, their two JGP finishes from 2005-06 are dropped and just their placements at the U.S. Championships and the World Junior Championships are counted, which are then multiplied by .3. Their point total comes out to 916. Though only eight events have been counted, their total is divided by 10, giving them a total score of 91.6.
