"We look forward to returning to Detroit," said David Raith, executive director, U.S. Figure Skating. "There is a great figure skating culture in the Detroit metro area, and we are confident its enthusiasm for the sport of figure skating will extend to fans and supporters throughout Michigan and the Midwest."
Skate America, the premier annual international figure skating competition held in the United States, returns to Detroit for the fourth time (1995, '97, '98). The event will feature three days of competition in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing. The field of competitors will include more than 50 world-class athletes, some of whom will compete at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White, two-time world ice dance champions and 2010 Olympic silver medalists, grew up in the area and train at the Arctic Figure Skating Club in nearby Canton, Mich.
"We are so excited that Detroit will host Skate America this fall," Davis and White said. "Over the years, Detroit has solidified itself as one of the top training cities in the world for figure skating. We are looking forward to hosting the international skating community in our hometown."
Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow, five-time U.S. and two-time Skate America ice dance champions, will serve as honorary chairs. Both work at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where Punsalan coaches and Swallow is the managing director.
The complete list of athletes selected to compete at 2013 Skate America will be announced June 1.
Skate America is the first of six events that make up the 2013 Grand Prix Series.
