(06/05/2012) - U.S. Figure Skating announced today the selection of Boston as the host city for the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Jan. 5-12, 2014.

The 2014 U.S. Championships will serve as the final qualifying event prior to the selection of the skaters who will represent Team USA Feb. 7-23, 2014, in Sochi, Russia, at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Competition and practice for the 2014 championships will be held at TD Garden and the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, respectively.

The annual event, held since 1914, is the nation's most prestigious figure skating event, with past winners including Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek and Massachusetts natives Nancy Kerrigan and Todd Eldredge. Champions will be crowned in 20 events: ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing at the senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile levels of the U.S. Figure Skating competitive structure.

The U.S. championships return to Boston for the seventh time in the event's history (1922, '26, '31, '41, '62, '01). The Boston area has hosted numerous regional and sectional championships and, most recently, the 2012 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. The 2013 World Synchronized Skating Championships will take place April 2-6, 2013, on the campus of Boston University.

"U.S. Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Boston for the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships," U.S. Figure Skating Executive Director David Raith said. "The area is steeped in figure skating tradition. I'm confident that the community's impressive skating history will extend to the 2014 U.S. Championships."

The U.S. championships annually attract more than 1,500 athletes, coaches and officials to the host community and has generated $20-$25 million in economic impact for recent host cities. The 2014 U.S. Olympic figure skating team will be announced following the senior events.

"The Skating Club of Boston is extremely pleased to have been chosen to host U.S. Figure Skating's premier event in its very special 100th anniversary year," club president Joe Blount said. "As a founding member of U.S. Figure Skating, we have a long and exciting history hosting the U.S. championships. Boston has always been home to some of the country's most enthusiastic skating fans, and with the support of the mayor's office and our partners at TD Garden, the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and the Mass Sports Partnership, the club is promising a spectacular event -- both on and off the ice -- that will long be remembered by athletes, officials and fans."

The event will be broadcast live on NBC Sports and online at icenetwork.com. Recent U.S. championships were held in Spokane, Wash. (2010), Greensboro, N.C. (2011), and San Jose, Calif. (2012). Next season's U.S. championships are slated for Jan. 20-27, 2013, in Omaha, Neb. Tickets to the 2014 U.S. Championships will be available later this summer.

In related news, U.S. Figure Skating announced the host cities for the 2014 regional and sectional championships, which will take place in the fall of 2013.

The top four skaters in the ladies and men's events at each of the nine regional championships will qualify for one of three sectional championships. The sectional championships are the only qualifying phase for pairs and ice dancing. The top four finishers at each level in each discipline at the sectional championships will earn a berth to the U.S. championships.
