Coinciding with NBC's broadcast of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in London, Yamaguchi and Hedican will cap off the evening by lighting a torch at the same time the official Olympic torch in London is lit.
Yamaguchi and Hedican met at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, and were married in 2000.
Various sports- and entertainment-themed events are planned throughout the day, including a synthetic "ice" rink featuring interactive events and complimentary skate use from U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and USA Curling.
"The Downtown Olympic Celebration will be a great way to celebrate together as a community how very fortunate we are to be home to the United States Olympic Committee, U.S. Paralympics and 22 Olympic national governing bodies," Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said. "Many of the athletes competing in London will have trained here at some point in their careers, and we look forward to cheering them on as they compete at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games."
Yamaguchi is a best-selling author, philanthropist and a winner of Dancing with the Stars. Hedican won the 2006 Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes and is a television sports analyst for the San Jose Sharks.
