Kavaguti and Smirnov gave a stunning performance, beginning with a smooth side-by-side triple toe-triple toe sequence followed by a strong triple twist and throw triple Salchow, earning them 122.29 points in the free skate.
The two-time world bronze medalists took their four-point advantage from Friday's free skate. Although Kavaguti let her foot drop on the throw triple loop and Smirnov doubled the second portion of their triple toe-triple toe, they managed to take gold with a total of 186.74 points.
"It was a good start for the next competition," Kavaguti said.
China's own Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang took silver on Saturday with 117.10 points. Their free skate program was marred when Dan Zhang fell on a side-by-side triple Salchow.
The 2006 Olympic silver medalists improved their third-place finish from the short program on Friday to finish with 177.67 points.
"We did quite well today, although we had some problems in the short program. Now we were second at Skate America and here which means we can go to the Final and hopefully we'll skate well there," Hao Zhang said.
Although Evora and Ladwig came in third in the free skate program with a nice triple twist, the 2011 Canadian champions scored higher as they skated to "Henry V."
