British-Belgian connection isn't based on movies and music

(08/10/2011) - Veteran competitors Jenna McCorkell and Kevin van der Perren would rather forget their performances at the 2011 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Moscow, where they placed 24th and 17th, respectively.

Due to a misunderstanding, the skaters -- who married in May 2008 -- arrived in Moscow sans their coach, Yuri Bureiko. It all stemmed from Kevin's disappointment with his near-miss at the 2011 ISU European Figure Skating Championships, where he lost out on a bronze medal.

"I skated really well in Bern but missed the bronze (which he had earned in 2007 and 2009), and I was quite down afterwards," the 28-year-old Belgian champion told reporter Alexandra Stevenson of iskate magazine. "I thought if I couldn't get it there, with two great showings, what chance do I have in worlds.

"That led to a lot of uncertainty about whether I should continue and, in turn, maybe sent out mixed signals. When I did decide to continue, we had not heard from Yuri for two weeks, so I went back to my old coach, Silvie de Rijcke. That eventually left Jenna without a coach."

The 24-year-old McCorkell, who hails from Coleraine in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, was also plagued by several injuries, including recurring toenail and back problems. She suffered a car accident and whiplash several days before arriving in Moscow.

"I just want to forget this season and start rebuilding," the British champion said. "I want to do a triple-triple [combination] next season."

Van der Perren is undecided about his competitive future, but McCorkell vows to continue, especially since the 2012 European Championships will be held in Sheffield, England. She plans new choreography by Lorna Brown, a former performer with John Curry's company.

"I worked with Lorna a couple of years ago and really liked her work," McCorkell said. "We're thinking of doing a Blues, and a more showy number for the short program."

Any favorite movies?

Jenna: Do not say A Cinderella Story. Let's say The Hangover.

Kevin: Scream IV

Jenna: I had to suffer through it with him.

What about music?

Jenna: Lady Gaga -- I saw her twice in concert. Kevin went with me the first time, and the second time, I had to give his ticket away.

Kevin: I listen to everything, nothing special, but a Lady Gaga concert isn't something I would want to see twice.

I hope you share the same taste in food, at least.

Kevin: All food is good.

Jenna: Not to me. I'm picky. I like Chinese food, but I don't eat any fish. I like vegetables and chicken. I'm not a big meat eater.

Kevin: If you could see Jenna's menu, you wouldn't think she could get through a program.

Any favorite books?

Jenna: Twilight

Kevin: I don't read.

Jenna: Yes, you do. You're reading a book right now about the Disney theme parks.

Kevin: True. It's about the construction of the parks; that's something that interests me. I don't think I could get through a regular book.

Okay, last question -- what are your favorite hobbies?

Jenna: I keep myself busy shopping, but not in Europe, only in the States. I love lululemon [athletic/yoga wear].

Kevin: Anything Disney, the theme parks as well as collectibles. I always read up on what's current.
