Award winners will be chosen based on the combined total of their short program and free skate program component marks at the U.S. Championships. In ice dancing, the program component marks for the original dance and the free dance will be combined. The award will rotate among the four disciplines annually using the following pattern: ladies (starting with the 2011 U.S. Championships), men's, ice dancing, pairs.
The $500 award is created out of the Ron and Gayle Hershberger Fund, which was established in 2009 through dozens of gifts made in tribute to Ron's long-term service to U.S. Figure Skating and to Gayle's support of her husband.
Hershberger served as U.S. Figure Skating's president from 2005-09 and, with the exception of 1993, sat on the U.S. Figure Skating Board of Directors from 1990-2010. He was the organization's secretary from 1992-95 and 1999-2002, as well as its vice president from 2002-05. Among the many U.S. Figure Skating committees on which Hershberger served were the Nominating Committee, which he chaired in 1992, and the Ethics Committee, of which he was the chair from 1996-99. He was also chair of the local organizing committee for the 1992 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Oakland, Calif.
The Hershbergers reside in Los Gatos, Calif., where Ron is of counsel with the Thoits, Love, Hershberger and McLean law firm in Palo Alto. They have two daughters, Alison and Rhonda.
