"Skate Canada is pleased to bring a skating event of this level to the City of Kingston. Hosting an event of this caliber involves participation from many different areas and Kingston has proven that they have all the resources to host the international skating community and put on a great show for skating fans," said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO. "We are looking forward to calling Kingston home for a week in October and of course are anticipating another memorable event with some of the world's best skaters."
Gary Kelly, Sport Tourism Manager for Tourism Kingston, a division of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation adds, "Working with Skate Canada is always a pleasure -- their events and the athletes participating are our national elite. We've fostered a strong relationship over the past two years and look forward to many future announcements which bring the best of the Canadian skaters to the city."
"An event like the Skate Canada International is a tremendous achievement for sport tourism in Kingston. Not only for the opportunity to host the best skaters in Canada and put Kingston in the media spotlight, but an event of this magnitude will generate at least 3,000 out-of-town visitors and realize a $5 million plus economic impact on the city," said Jeff Garrah, CEO of KEDCO.
Skate Canada International is the second competition in the annual ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. The other events take place in the United States (Skate America), China (Cup of China), France (Trophee Eric Bompard), Russia (Rostelecom Cup) and Japan (NHK Trophy). Skaters are awarded points based on their placements in the series' events. The top-six men and ladies and the top-six pair and ice dance teams qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Beijing, China, December 9-12, 2010.
Competitors for the Skate Canada International, and all of the ISU Grand Prix events, will be announced following the ISU Grand Prix Commission meetings in June.
All-event ticket packages go on-sale May 7, 2010 at 10:00 (ET). All-event tickets are $155 plus applicable surcharges (taxes included).
