Scholarship goes towards helping figure skaters defray cost of college

(12/16/2008) - The Tommy Martin Fund (TMF) is now accepting applicants for the 2009 scholarship year.

The Tommy Martin Fund is a scholarship that helps figure skaters defray the cost of college. The fund originated in 1999 in memory of Tommy Martin, son of Bobby and Barbie Martin, and, to date, seven scholarships have been awarded to deserving skaters.

The Tommy Martin Fund has provided more than $23,000 in educational support to deserving members of the figure skating community. The TMF Scholarship rewards those applicants who are active in giving back to their community, demonstrate exceptional passion for their studies and show financial need.

To be eligible for the Tommy Martin Fund Scholarship, applicants must be:
• A resident of New England
• Enrolled at an accredited four-year college
• A member of U.S. Figure Skating or PSA in good standing

Last year, the Tommy Martin Fund was awarded to Kelvin Vu. Vu graduated third in his class at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough, Mass., and holds a 3.88 grade point average at Yale University, where he is studying ecology and evolutionary biology. He has given back to the community through his work with special needs children. Vu has competed at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships twice and the U.S. Junior Championships three times. He was a member of the 2007 State Farm Scholastic Honors Team. He aspires to attend graduate school to pursue a degree in ecological biology and hopes to one day support and participate in ecosystem research and conservation. Vu was awarded $3,000 toward his college tuition.

The Tommy Martin Fund welcomes first-time and returning participants to join us in our sixth annual fundraising golf tournament at the Wedgewood Pines Country Club in Stow, Mass. The tournament will be held on June 10, 2009 at 1 p.m.
