White, longtime girlfriend Belbin engagedOlympic gold medalist announces news on Twitter and Instagram
Charlie White is having a heck of a year.
First, an Olympic gold medal; then, a spin on Dancing With The Stars. And now, he is engaged to his longtime girlfriend and fellow Olympic ice dancer, Tanith Belbin.
White made the news public via Twitter, of course, posting a photo of the happy couple during their vacation to Hawaii with the following message:
Couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting for the best time in our life! Hashtag she said yes!!! http://t.co/6s8MRyfSnL- Charlie White (@CharlieaWhite) June 10, 2014
Belbin released one comment to reporters through the couple's media representative, saying, "Charlie and I couldn't be happier to begin this next chapter of our lives together."
No word was immediately available regarding the couple's wedding plans.
Although White was partnered with Meryl Davis on the ice for 17 years and with ballroom dancing partner Sharna Burgess on Dancing With The Stars, his true life partner has been Belbin. White, 26, and Belbin, 29, began dating a little more than five years ago.
Many in the skating community have known for a long time that the two were dating, but the couple didn't make much of their relationship in public over the years. They were so low-key, fans often believed (wrongly) that Davis and White were a romantic couple.
Before he headed to Hawaii, White said in an interview that he was looking forward to the tropical vacation, a welcome respite following the whirlwind lifestyle he had been living in the wake of his Olympic and television success.
"I can't wait to unplug totally and be with Tanith for a week in Hawaii," White said.
Belbin and White got to know each other through ice dancing, and the two spent much of their careers training in suburban Detroit.
Belbin was the longtime partner of Ben Agosto, and the two earned a silver medal at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino. Belbin and Agosto competed in 2010 in Vancouver and placed fourth.
Davis and White, meanwhile, won silver at the 2010 Winter Olympics and then became the first U.S. ice dancing team to win an Olympic gold medal in Sochi in February. Belbin was in Sochi to cheer on Davis and White.
Now, the skating community is cheering the team of Belbin and White.
Almost as soon as White disseminated his tweet, congratulatory messages began pouring in online.
